Screencast 15 - email sorcery
I just published my longest screencast yet. This one weighs in at 32 minutes and covers email management from top to bottom including such subjects as:
1. Pop v. iMap
2. Gmail v. MobileMe
3. Best Practices (managing your inbox and smart folders)
4. Spam
5. Archiving old mail

Just a quick way round I use for those POP emails that you can't change to IMAP, yes believe it or not I have some that I cannot change !!
Anyway I am able to forward to my .mac account and then discard at the host, that way it gets treated by .MAC as a IMAP mail, and I have a couple of simple rules to deal with them if I keep them in MAIL on my Mac's, not ideal but if anyone has the same scenario they could do the same, of course they only have to forward them to any IMAP server not just .Mac.

I have a little OF follow-up question for you. How do you go from the email screen to the quick entry in OF? I use the clipping feature and the shortcut (control>option>c) but it only works if I first copy to my clipboard the part of the email that I want to clip.
You appeared to clip right from the email without any copying. And the entire email went directly into the OF quick entry box. How does one do that in OF? OF sorcerer!
I was just reading Seth Godin's blog today. Another macro-tip for email. Pick one time of day (maybe 2) to process your inbox so you are not processing all through your day, and getting interrupted constantly. http://is.gd/1e1v
Thanks for this. One question though - with existing local email is it possible to upload to an IMAP server and preserve the timeline? If so how?
That would be easy enough Max.
If you're moving or copying emails to a different email account just select all the messages in the inbox of the old account & copy them to the inbox of the new account (or wherever you want to copy them to). Copy the old sent messages to the new sent messages mailbox etc.
If you want to change your existing email POP account to an IMAP one you'd create equivalent folders on your Mac first (Mailbox > New Mailbox & select 'On my Mac') for Inbox, Archived, Sent Messages etc. Copy the messages from the old account to those folders. Once you've copied them all over remove the old email account. Then set it up again, but selecting the IMAP option rather than the POP one. Once you've set up the new IMAP account move the messages from the 'On my Mac' folders to the equivalent folders in your IMAP account.
David- I just got around to watching your screencast over the weekend and wanted to thank you for all your tips. Not only have you inspired me to tackle this topic at my Local Mac Users Group meeting, but I think you may have also helped me make some much needed tweaks to the way I handle email. Oh yeah, and you cost me some money too - I've been thinking about Mail Steward and finally pulled the trigger.
