MPU 74: Workflows with DonMcAllister

Mac Power Users Episode 74, Workflows with Don McAllister, is live. Don is the king of all Mac screencasting and, even if you aren’t a screencaster, this one is worth a listen. Get the episode over at 5by5. Also, don’t forget to subscribe in iTunes.

Fever and Reeder

As Google becomes increasingly creepy, I’ve received several queries about how to leave Google Reader. The short answer is that I’m not aware of a good way to do that, currently. However, David Chartier posted a screenshot from an upcoming release of Reeder, my favorite iOS and Mac news app, that includes support for Fever, a news aggregation and evaluation service I’ve always wanted to try. If you are looking to leave Google Reader, this may be the combination you’re looking for.

ABA TechShow

The clock is ticking down for the American Bar Association TechShow next month in Chicago, March 29-31. Normally, you’d think a convention of lawyers should be the last place on earth you’d want to go. This is different. These are geeky lawyers and they are both smart and fun. My sessions will include the use of technology in trial and going paperless with a Mac. Stay tuned for further details. If you are a legal professional, don’t miss out. Early bird pricing expires this Friday.

Also, if you are attending, I’m hosting a Taste of Techshow Dinner on Friday, March 30 for mixed Mac and Windows using attorneys. If you are attending, go sign up. I don’t want to be the only Mac guy in the room.

Sponsor: InVision Prototyping Tool

The UI prototyping phase of the design process is crucial to get right. It’s about figuring out how your product will work, and ensuring everyone is aligned before moving into building.

InVision is a web-based prototyping tool that lets you paint an accurate and realistic picture that anyone can understand.

InVision is beautiful on Mobile as well. Simply navigate to your project from your iOS or mobile device and experience a realistic picture of how the app will feel. ‘Save to Home Screen’ on iOS for a full-screen experience.

As a special offer for our readers, InVision is offering a 30 day free trial along with a special discount for the first six months.

Design anywhere. Bring it to life with InVision.

A Los Angeles Slytherin

I was in the city and saw this car. I’m pretty sure the best part is the broom in the bike rack but the reference to page 394 was pretty good too. This post is an excellent companion piece to my encounter with Obi Shawn.

MPU 73: Podcasting How and Why

Mac Power Users Episode 73, Podcasting, How and Why, is live. We’ve been receiving requests for a nuts and bolts podcasting show since the beginning and I’ve been resistant. It seems to me a lot of people don’t really care. This show did, however, give me a chance to talk yet again about that fantastic talk John Gruber and Merlin Mann did at SXSW, which is always fun. Get the episode over at 5by5. Also, don’t forget to subscribe in iTunes.

Markdown Service Tools

Recently, I’ve switched my billing workflow in the day job over to markdown. As a result of the way I’m jumping between platforms, I’m not always getting proper markdown line breaks. (to force a <br> code in markdown, you need to insert three spaces before hitting return.)

So I wrote my friend Brett Terpstra yesterday lamenting this hitch in my giddyup and Brett wrote back in ten minutes explaining: 1. This is solvable with a service; 2. He already solved it. Today you can download it with the latest update to Brett’s Markdown Services. These are so ridiculously useful. I ♥ Brett.

Citizens United Explained

“A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold.”
Citizens United v. FEC, 130 S. Ct. 876, 954 (2010) (Stevens, J., dissenting)

This whole thing makes me nuts. When the next presidential election goes completely bat-shit crazy (it will), go back and read this explanation of why.
